This currency redesign focuses on the inequality of wages between men and women in the U.S., specifically women of color. Backed by diligent research on the topic, this design helps convey the wage gap in a very visual and easy-to-understand way.

The design approach was just that, finding a way to visually convey a message that can be diluted and abstract. The front of the currency was designed to look supportive of the GOP; Republican senators look up and onward with dignity. Upon closer inspection, the votes of the failed Paycheck Fairness Act of 2021 can be found underneath their portraits, subtly calling out the Republican-majority senate at this time. The asterisk next to each monetary amount calls for the viewer to read the back of the bill for details regarding its worth. It’s here that viewers understand that these full-size bills should be cut along the dotted lines if they are a woman or woman of color. Doing so would physically alter the currency and show how much a dollar is worth to WOC in comparison to men.
